Many people have questions about tanning health, and we’re here to answer some of the most common questions about fake tans.

Fake Tan FAQs

Is Fake Tan Bad for Your Skin?

While many people worry that fake tan can damage your skin, the good news is that, when used correctly, fake tan is perfectly safe for your skin. This is especially true for our products, which are made from natural, organic ingredients that nourish and hydrate the skin while providing a beautiful, streak-free tan. Most self-tanning products contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the outer layer of the skin to produce a temporary tan. DHA is considered safe when applied topically, but it’s crucial to follow the product’s instructions and avoid contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.

Does Fake Tan Age Your Skin?

Using a high-quality fake tan can actually help to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays by providing a barrier between your skin and the sun. This can help to reduce the risk of premature ageing, wrinkles and sun damage. Plus, our fake tan products are infused with moisture-rich ingredients that maintain the skin’s hydration, thus improving skin elasticity. Consistent hydration of the skin is one of the best defences against ageing. So, while all fake tans give you a sun-kissed look, Beau Bronzage is one of the brands that also plays an essential role in your anti-ageing routine.

Does Fake Tan Cause Cancer?

No, fake tan does not cause cancer. Unlike traditional tanning methods that rely on exposure to harmful UV radiation, fake tan products work by utilising chemical reactions on the skin’s surface to create the appearance of a tan. The active ingredient in most fake tan products is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which interacts with amino acids in the outer layer of the skin to produce pigments. DHA has been deemed safe by regulatory agencies like the FDA and the European Union. Since fake tan does not involve exposure to UV rays, it does not pose the same cancer risks associated with natural or artificial UV tanning.

Is It Bad to Fake Tan Every Week?

This largely depends on the type of fake tan you’re using and how your skin responds. As long as your skin isn’t getting irritated and you’re properly hydrating and exfoliating between applications, fake tanning weekly should not be problematic. However, it’s important to remember that fake tan can build up on the skin over time, which can lead to a darker, more intense colour. This may not be desirable for everyone, so it’s important to use fake tan responsibly and to give your skin a break from time to time.

How Long Does Fake Tan Last?

The longevity of a fake tan can vary depending on several factors, including the quality of the product used, how well your skin has been prepared before application and how well you maintain it. Typically, a fake tan can last anywhere from 5 to 10 days, but instant tans come off as soon as you wash them. It’s important to remember that keeping your skin moisturised and avoiding activities that cause excessive sweating can help prolong the life of your tan.

Can I Have an Allergic Reaction to Fake Tan?

Yes, some people may have an allergic reaction to fake tan, especially if they are sensitive to certain ingredients. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include redness, itching, and hives. It’s important to be careful when applying fake tan, as you may be allergic to certain ingredients. It’s always best to do a patch test first to see how your skin is going to react.

Can I Use Fake Tan If I Have Eczema?

If you have eczema, it’s important to be careful when using fake tan, as some ingredients may aggravate your condition. However, many people with eczema are able to use fake tan without any problems, especially if they choose a high-quality product. If you have any concerns, it’s always best to speak to your doctor or a dermatologist.

Can I Fake Tan My Face?

Absolutely! You can certainly use our products on your face, but it’s important to note that facial skin is more delicate and might react differently to tanning products. For face application, use a minimal amount of product and blend it well into your hairline and jawline using an applicator mitt for a natural, streak-free look. Avoid contact with your eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Can You Fake Tan While Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

Your journey through pregnancy and breastfeeding is special, and our products are designed to be safe during these stages. At Beau Bronzage, we want you to feel confident and beautiful. There is no evidence to suggest that using fake tan is harmful during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They’re non-toxic and do not harm the baby. However, due to hormonal changes, skin can become more sensitive, so a patch test is recommended.

Fake Tan & Suntan FAQs

Do Scars Tan?

Scars are a part of your unique story, and our products are designed to work with all skin types, including scarred skin. Keep in mind that scar tissue doesn’t tan naturally in the sun, but it may absorb fake tan. How well it works depends on the type of scar and its location on the body. But if you have scars that you would like to even out, you should speak to a dermatologist.

Can Fake Tan Help Protect Against Sunburn?

Applying fake tan does not protect your skin against harmful UV radiation despite the darkened colour of the skin. While the tan may make you look bronzed and beautiful, it does not contain any sun protection factor (SPF), so it won’t provide any defence against sunburn or sun damage. To protect your skin, you should always use sunscreen with a high SPF when you’re out in the sun.

Can You Put Fake Tan Over Sunburn?

It is not recommended to put a fake tan over sunburn. When the skin is burned, it becomes damaged, and using fake tan may cause further irritation and damage. Plus, it could be painful. We recommend waiting until your skin has healed completely before applying any fake tanning products.

Can I Go Tanning 2 Days in a Row?

You shouldn’t use a tanning bed for 2 days in a row, but you can sunbathe for 2 days in a row provided you wear sunscreen and sun-protective gear.

For fake tan, there are no health concerns with tanning 2 days in a row, but it’s usually only necessary if you’re using an instant tan. With other fake tans, you risk overapplying, which can give you uneven patches. Also, the full colour of a fake tan usually takes time to develop completely. For non-instant tans, it’s best to wait at least 48 hours before applying another layer so you can see the true colour and decide if you want to go darker.

Spray Tan Health FAQs

Are Tanning Nasal Sprays Safe?

No, tanning nasal sprays are not safe. They contain a chemical called melanotan, which is not approved for use in the UK or other countries. Melanotan has been linked to a range of serious side effects, including high blood pressure, heart attacks, and skin cancer. Your safety is non-negotiable, and we strongly discourage the use of tanning nasal sprays.

Can You Spray Tan While Pregnant?

Spray tanning, in general, is considered safe for pregnant individuals when done in a well-ventilated area and when the self-tanning product is applied externally. The active ingredient in most self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the outer layer of the skin to produce a temporary tan. DHA is generally considered safe when applied topically and is not absorbed into the bloodstream. But it’s essential to avoid inhaling or ingesting the product, and it should not be applied to damaged or compromised skin as DHA is only approved for external use.
